Detroit has taken a significant step onto the global culinary stage. Visit Detroit announced that the city will be included in the MICHELIN Guide’s forthcoming American Great Lakes edition—an influential recognition that positions local restaurants for potential MICHELIN Star status pending the formal selection process. Anonymous MICHELIN inspectors are already conducting visits across the Detroit region, quietly evaluating establishments for inclusion. The full list of selected restaurants will be unveiled in 2027 at the inaugural MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony, details of which are expected at a later date. Local tourism leaders see the announcement as more than symbolic. Claude Molinari, President and CEO of Visit Detroit, called the inclusion “transformational,” noting that destinations featured in the MICHELIN Guide often experience measurable economic benefits, including increased visitation, longer stays, and higher traveler spending. For Detroit, the designation signals rising credibility as a food destination—and a potential boost across hospitality, retail, and related sectors. Globally, the MICHELIN Guide remains a benchmark for culinary excellence. Its distinctions range from one to three MICHELIN Stars, awarded for exceptional cuisine, to the Bib Gourmand designation recognizing high-quality dining at accessible prices. Additional honors include the Green Star for sustainability and various professional awards. Inspectors evaluate restaurants using five criteria: ingredient quality, technical skill, flavor harmony, the chef’s personal expression, and consistency. These standards ensure that recognition carries equal weight worldwide, reinforcing Detroit’s opportunity to compete on an international level.
