Sandra Haro and Jose Granados, the sister-and-brother team behind Mezcal Mexican Bar & Kitchen have expanded their footprint in downtown Ferndale with the opening of Balam Coffee & Wine. The café, wine bar and gathering space is located at 207 E. Nine Mile Road. Balam is located just steps from their original restaurant, which opened in late 2021.
The café will feature traditional Mexican coffee beverages including: Mazapan, inspired by the iconic De la Rosa peanut candy; Chocolate Abuelita, made with espresso and Abuelita chocolate; and Mexican Wedding Cake, inspired by traditional pecan cookies. Coffee will be sourced directly from Mexico and South America and paired with Mexican pastries, empanadas, wraps, salads and fresh juices. Additionally, Balam offers a wine-forward experience highlighting a rotating selection of Latin American red and white wines, including distinctive pours such as Trivento’s White Malbec and Santa Julia’s El Zorrito Natural Orange Chardonnay. In Mayan culture, Balam is the word for “jaguar,” the most sacred and powerful animal in Mesoamerican mythology. It represents a complex blend of physical ferocity, spiritual protection and divine authority. “The jaguar is a protector and a strong animal in the culture,” said Haro. “That meaning resonated with us as we thought about creating a space that feels welcoming, intentional and rooted in our heritage.” Our goal with Balam is to create something that feels different but familiar,” added Granados. “It’s a place to slow down, enjoy great coffee or wine, and experience flavors tied to Latin American culture.”
