Palu Café opens in Southfield

A new café with deep cultural roots has arrived in Southfield. Palu Café, located on Greenfield Road, is an Armenian coffee shop and bakery, offering a unique blend of tradition, flavor, and community. Founded by Khatchig Kafafian, the café is more than a place to dine — it’s a heartfelt tribute to heritage, family, and connection. The name “Palu Café” honors the late May Kafafian, a beloved and influential member of the Armenian community who passed away in April 2015. Known for her generosity, resilience, and dedication to preserving Armenian traditions, May’s legacy lives on through the café’s mission and spirit. The name itself also reflects the family’s ancestral roots in the historic town of Palu, once a vibrant stop along the Silk Road with a significant Armenian population. This rich history shapes the café’s identity and inspiration. The menu showcases authentic Armenian flavors, with a focus on freshly made flatbreads. Highlights include zahtar flatbread—topped with thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, olive oil, cheese, and a medley of vegetables. Guests can pair these offerings with traditional Armenian coffee, espresso drinks, fresh-baked pastries, and other specialty items. “Each dish reflects a commitment to quality and cultural authenticity,” the founders say, “offering guests a true taste of Armenia.”
